The Eve Appeal is the only UK national charity raising awareness and funding research into the five gynaecological cancers – ovarian, womb, cervical, vaginal and vulval.
Raising awareness for cervical cancer in particular is a cause very close to our Customer Service Manager, Kate’s heart, after being diagnosed with the disease herself – twice. So anything she can get involved in to help spread the word on this and other gynae cancers, she’s game!
Throughout May, The Eve Appeal and their long term supporter Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW), are bringing together beauty brands and retailers to launch #GetLippy, a NEW campaign encouraging women – and men – to speak up and out about the signs and symptoms of women’s cancers, and raise funds for life saving research.
We asked Kate why she thinks it’s so important to talk about women’s cancers, and why she’ll be getting involved with the #getlippy campaign.
“Everyone knows the word ‘cancer’, and sadly most of us will have been affected by it in one way or another. But certain cancers aren’t very well known and so aren’t really talked about. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35, but how much do you know about it? Or other women’s cancers? And I get it, we’re all very ‘stiff upper lip’ about it and are embarrassed to talk about our private parts! But we need to make a change and make it OK to discuss our feminine health, especially with something as awful as cancer.
“I wrote a blog during my second round of treatment for cancer, which I tried to keep light-hearted whilst discussing some pretty serious subjects. My way to deal with my diagnosis was with a bit of humour, but of course everyone is different, and this is where charities like The Eve Appeal come in. They’re a fantastic support to those who need it during a terrifying time.
“I’m getting involved in The Eve Appeal’s #getlippy campaign to try and get people talking. If it can encourage just one person to be brave enough to talk to a friend or tell their doctor about something different “down there”, that would be amazing. And it could be lifesaving.”
There are lots of ways that you too can get involved in the #getlippy campaign –
